In September, I'll leave with Adventures in Missions for 9 months on their Immersion trip. Up until Thursday, I didn't know where we will be going. I wanted to share with you a few facts about the first country we will stop in: Honduras.
This is where Honduras is located:
This is what their flag looks like:
The official language is Spanish – I'll have to refresh on what I learned in High School.
The population is 8,143,564 (July 2011).
Land mas of Honduras is 43,278 which is slightly larger than Tennessee.
Money is called lempira (HNL) – 1USD = (about) 19HNL
Honduras gained Independence from Spain in 1821, and then from Mexico in 1822, their Independence day is on September 15th.
The typical school year starts in February and ends in November – the same as Uganda. . .
The main staples of the Honduran economy are fishing and farming.
Compassion International has more than 39,900 children participating in more than 165 child development centers.
Religion: 100% Christian – I was excited about this until I read that 97% are Roman Catholic, and only 3% are Protestant now I'm slightly overwhelmed (if that's possible).
Almost 65% of Hondurans live below the poverty line – definition of international poverty line = living on $1.25 (or less) per day.
Going on this Immersion trip will give me a wider perspective of international missions. Living in Honduras this coming fall will not only expand my Spanish speaking skills, but will be a great starting point to this journey and to speaking Truth and living Love. This nation so desperately need both.
