So on my Immersion trip (the 9 month long trip) has three stops. No, I’m not staying in Honduras for nine months, just 3 months. After that, I’ll move on to Thailand. Here are a few facts:
Population = 65,905,410 (estimated July 2009)
The school year typically runs from May to March – 6 years of education is provided, secondary school (AKA high school) is 6 years, but only a minority continue with secondary school.
Thais play soccer, table tennis, badminton, volleyball, kite flying and takro (object: keep a wicker ball in the air without using hands, hmm. . .)
The currency is called the baht – 1USD = about 30 bahts
The languages = Thi, English (secondary language of the elite), ethnic and regional dialect
The area of Thailand is slightly smaller than Texas. . . or equivalent to France
Compassion International has more than 32,700 children in 210 child development centers
People living with HIV/AIDS = (about) 610,000
Religion = 94.6% Buddhist, 4.6% Muslim, .7% Christian, and .1% other
Around 80,000 women and children have been sold into Thailand’s sex industry since 1990
